Role / Responsibility
The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is responsible for reviewing the University's program for humane care and use of animals; for reviewing concerns involving the care and use of animals; for inspecting the University animal housing facilities and study areas; for approving animal use activities; for investigating reports of concern about animal welfare or non-compliance; and, if necessary, for suspending activities involving animals.
Regulatory Authority
The IACUC is guided by Federal regulations and policies set forth in the "Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals” (PHS 1986), the “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals” (ILAR 1996) and the USDA Animal Welfare Regulations (CFR 1985).
Application Process to Use Animal Subject
All investigators who plan to use any live, vertebrate animals in research, testing, or teaching must complete and submit a protocol IACUC-1 Form for IACUC review and approval. For some activities, additional forms may be required (e.g., for activities involving surgery, stress, special housing requirements or use of hazardous materials). To expedite the review process, the principal investigator should contact the attending veterinarian regarding issues related to surgery and pain/distress and obtain a pre-review of the protocol by a member of the IACUC. No animals may be ordered or received and no animals may be used until the protocol has been approved. Student projects involving the use of animals must comply with the above regulations, whether or not the projects are in partial fulfillment of degree requirements. The major advisor of masters or doctoral students, or supervisor of undergraduate research projects, serves as the Principal Investigator on the project.
